Chakras: An Overview

For the next eight weeks I plan to discuss the chakras and how to keep them aligned and even work with them on your healing journey. I will explain how I work with the chakras in a massage and how they correlate with Reiki. This week I will give an overview of what the chakras are, what they mean, and how they affect us everyday. Then each week I will discuss each chakra individually for a more in-depth look and to go over each individual meaning.

“Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘wheel,’ ‘disk,’ or ‘vortex,’ and very intuitive people describe the chakras as funnel-shaped energy points” (Quest 290). The chakras are energy centers within the body “where spiritual energy of your aura, the Ki or life force, circulates actively” (Quest 290). Basically, these centers are where your energy is stored and flows throughout your body. The chakras are connected to the physical body as well as our spiritual selves. If the chakras are balanced and healthy, then your body feels balanced and healthy. Conversely, if they are unbalanced, blocked, or unopened then you may feel sick, pain, or even depressed and anxious.

Each chakra correlates to a color, has its own vibrational energy, and helps work with different areas of the body. There are 7 main chakras within the body that go along the spine. Some people see 8 main chakras, but for the sake of consistency I will focus on the 7 most well-known chakras. There are minor chakras as well–in the palms,  elbows, feet, knees, etc.–which all work with the 7 main chakras to maintain harmony and balance within the body.

The first of the seven chakras is the root chakra whose color is red. This chakra is located at the base of the spine near the tail bone. This chakra is related to the earth and how we interact and relate with the earth itself. This is the chakra that determines “fight or flight,” it is our chakra that helps us understand and have the need for security, and is “indicative of our need for logic and order.” This is our grounding chakra. It keeps us aware of our surroundings and what is happening within us and around us.

The sacral chakra is right within the pelvic bowl, and its color is orange. This is our center for creativity, sexuality, joy, and relationships. This chakra helps with reproductive function. It is also the center for compassion.

The solar plexus chakra is located right above the naval and the corresponding color is yellow. This is our center of confidence, balance, stability, and power. When aligned this chakra helps us feel strong, at peace, and energetic. This is the power house chakra within our bodies.

The heart chakra located at the center of the chest glows green. This is the center of love, compassion, empathy, and also correlates to our relationships with others.

The throat chakra rests right at the base of the neck (near the thyroid) and is blue. It is the center of communication–speaking and listening. When aligned, a person can speak eloquently and can articulate needs and wants with ease and grace.

The third eye chakra is located in between the eyes and glows indigo. It is our intuitive center. This chakra, when balanced, allows you to be open to clairvoyance (clear sight) and works with you in meditation.

The crown chakra is located at the top of your head and is a violet color. This is the chakra that connects you to Spirit, God, the Universe, Energy, etc. This chakra allows you to connect to anything and everything and works with your third eye chakra in intuitive meditations to receive messages.

Within Reiki the chakras are utilized to bring about harmony within the body. If one or more of these chakras are blocked the energy used with Reiki can help align the chakras and bring about change to the energy so it is no longer stuck or closed off. The same goes with massage, but in a more direct way. Massage moves the muscles, fascia, and blood, which would naturally circulate your body’s energy in turn working to open up any blocked chakras.

Wonderful ways to open and align chakras is through yoga, Reiki, massage, and meditation because all of these work with the energy within the body. If the energy is moving the chakras’ wheels will turn and flow with the revitalized energy. Visit my blog on meditation, yoga, Reiki, and massage to learn more about energy flow. Remember if your energy is blocked this can hinder healing and cause illness. Low energy can lead to negative thoughts, which can cause illness and depression. All of this is intertwined and all of this can help you on your healing journey. It starts with you.
