CBD is becoming more well known for it’s therapeutic qualities. I want to go more in depth into why it is beneficial for those who experience chronic pain, whether from injury, IBS, surgery, etc. Pain has “physical and emotional components“, so it is best to address both because the mind and body are connected. But, CBD can help with depression and anxiety both of which can contribute to and manifest into pain within the body.
Why does CBD help with pain management?
The cannabinoids within the cannabis plant “work together to provide various therapeutic benefits to the human body.” The chemical components found within the hemp plant all work with the endocannabinoid system within our body that is responsible for homeostasis (keeping the body balanced–out of pain, free from anxiety, able to sleep, and overall healthy). When our endocannabinoid system falls out of harmony then pain can manifest, sleep disorders come to the surface, and depression and anxiety can also result. But the cannabinoids within the cannabis plant work to provide a wide variety of ways to help the human body and restore homeostasis.
CBD, as mentioned in my previous blog, is non-psychotropic, so you won’t experience the “high” associated with cannabis containing THC. It still works with the endocannabinoid system like THC, however. CBD is considered an analgesic and anti-inflammatory, which contribute to pain relief, though the side-effects are minimal. Pain can be either an inflammatory issue and/or a neurological issue (migraines and fibromyalgia, for example). Studies are finding that “treatment resistant” ailments like migraines, IBS, and fibromyalgia may be a result of a deficiency in the endocannabinoid system. Because of this, using a cannabinoid in treatment, like CBD, can help in reducing pain and inflammation. IBS is a common problem among many people. CBD is being found as an effective treatment for IBS because of its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.
Muscle pain and nerve pain can be reduced by CBD, again because it is anti-inflammatory, but also because it is antispasmodic. CBD lacks the the stimulant associated with THC, so it is “preferable in treating muscle spasticity.” Muscle spasms can be painful so using CBD to calm the muscle can relieve that pain. Nerve pain associated with fibromyalgia can also be reduced with CBD. One study found a reduction in pain, stiffness, increased relaxation, and increased mental wellbeing among fibromyalgia patients.
CBD pain relief and massage:
As mentioned in my CBD and massage blog, I use CBD salve, lotion, and tinctures to help my clients relax and feel pain relief in my CBD massages. I have several clients who have felt the benefits of CBD. Several of my clients have fibromyalgia, low back pain, neck pain, among other things and feel the results from CBD treatment in their massages. I have a client who no longer feels stiffness and has increased mobility (this after just 3 CBD massages!). Another client had pain in the low back and was able to feel some relief after a CBD massage. And another who feels anxious was able to feel a sense of calm on the massage table.
More information can be found on my CBD page regarding my approach with CBD and the benefits. So many people are looking for an alternative to narcotic pharmaceuticals. I’m not a doctor and would never advise someone to stop their medication without first consulting their physician, but I can say that CBD, and cannabis in general, is proving to be a wonderful alternative. What’s even better is CBD does not have the side-effects narcotic drugs can have and it is non-habit forming. Opioids have a long list of side-effects, and millions of Americans are addicted to opioids and risk overdose and death. CBD does not have these issues, so maybe it is time to look at alternatives and take charge of your health.
